A recipe, broken down.

Add what goes into the dish. We’ll work out what goes into each serving.

1. Add your ingredients

Try “chicken breast raw” or “rice cooked”. Match the food’s preparation to the weight you enter.

How to calculate nutrition in a homemade recipe

Add the nutrition contributed by each ingredient, then divide the total by the number of equal servings. This free recipe nutrition calculator estimates calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat, and fiber. No account is required.

    1. Search for each ingredient and select the entry that matches its preparation, such as raw chicken or cooked rice.
    2. Enter the edible amount used in grams or ounces. Include oils, sauces, and toppings that stay in the dish.
    3. Enter how many equal servings the recipe makes and calculate.
    4. For meal prep, optionally weigh the finished batch and the portion you ate, excluding containers.

    Formulas

    Ingredient nutrient = nutrient per 100 g × ingredient weight in grams ÷ 100

Whole recipe nutrient = sum of ingredient nutrients

Per-serving nutrient = whole recipe nutrient ÷ number of equal servings

Weighed-portion nutrient = whole recipe nutrient × portion weight ÷ finished recipe weight

One ounce is converted to 28.349523125 grams. Calculations retain precision until display, which rounds to one decimal place. A small nonzero amount can display as zero after rounding. Missing data stays unavailable: if any ingredient lacks a nutrient, that nutrient's recipe total and portion estimates are not shown as complete.

Worked example: banana and milk smoothie

For an example containing 100 g raw banana and 200 g whole milk with added vitamin D, the selected USDA entries give:

NutrientWhole recipeEach of 2 equal servings
    Calories211 kcal105.5 kcal
    Protein7.4 g3.7 g
    Carbs32.4 g16.2 g
    Fat6.8 g3.4 g
    Fiber2.6 g1.3 g

These are example estimates, not a recommended meal or a personalized target. The calculation uses the original, unrounded ingredient values. If the finished smoothie weighs 300 g, a 75 g portion contains one quarter of the recipe, or approximately 52.8 kcal.

    Food data and sources

The searchable library contains 7,793 foods from USDA FoodData Central's SR Legacy dataset, final release April 2018. It includes generic and historical prepared-food entries. Each selected ingredient links to its USDA record so you can check its description and nutrition. This is a fixed historical dataset, not a live database of current product labels.

    What cooking changes

The calculator assumes the entered ingredients are retained and evenly distributed. Added or evaporated water changes weight and nutrition per gram. It does not, by itself, add or remove the recipe's calories. Discarded fat, drained liquid, food left in the pan, and unevenly distributed ingredients can change what you actually eat; this tool does not model those losses.

Use an ingredient's raw weight with a raw database entry, or its cooked weight with a cooked entry. Finished batch weight is only used to divide the total nutrition into weighed portions. It does not automatically turn raw foods into cooked database entries. For help converting weights, see the Raw & Cooked Weight Converter.

    Recipe nutrition calculator questions

Can I calculate calories per serving for any recipe?

You can estimate a recipe when suitable database entries and ingredient weights are available. Add each ingredient, enter the amounts, and divide by the number of equal servings. Results depend on how closely the selected foods match your ingredients.

Can I enter cups, tablespoons, or a whole banana?

This version uses grams and ounces. A cup's weight varies by ingredient and preparation, so we do not use one universal conversion. Weigh the edible amount without peels, bones, or packaging unless the entry explicitly describes those parts.

What if my ingredient or brand is missing?

Try a simpler generic food name and check its preparation. Do not select a different food just to get a result. Current package labels may be more appropriate for branded ingredients; the Serving Size & Calorie Calculator can scale those label values separately.

Can I use it for meal-prep portions?

Yes. Enable the optional weighed-portion fields, enter the finished batch weight, and enter your portion weight. The result assumes the portion has the same mix of ingredients as the whole batch. A serving with more meat or sauce than the rest can differ.

Is this a nutrition label generator?

No. It is an estimate for personal food journaling. It does not produce a verified commercial Nutrition Facts label, apply nutrient-retention factors, or assess allergens.

    Does Mindful save my recipe?

This web calculator keeps your ingredient list and amounts in the current page's browser state. Reloading or leaving the page clears them. Analytics receives only fixed tool-interaction identifiers, not searches, ingredient names, weights, or results. The copy button copies your summary only when you request it.

For daily targets, use the Calorie & Macro Calculator or Protein Calculator.
